Ciclodan: Uses, Dosage, Side Effects and Composition

Ciclodan is an antifungal medication indicated for the treatment of a wide range of fungal infections of the skin, hair, and nails.

It contains Ciclopirox as its active ingredient. It also contains inactive ingredients called excipients in sufficient quantities.

Ciclodan is a broad-spectrum, synthetic antifungal agent which belongs to the class of medications called hydroxypyridone.

It is available in different dosage forms which include topical solution, cream, shampoo, suspension and gel.

Similarly, it is available in different strengths, 0.77% and 8% strengths being the most common ones in the market.

Being a broad spectrum antifungal agent as we noted in the beginning of this article, Ciclopirox is often prescribed for the treatment of ringworm, athlete’s foot, jock itch, and other fungal infections of the skin.

It is also used to treat fungal infections of the nails, such as toenail fungus.

How Does Ciclodan Work?

Ciclodan acts by chelation of polyvalent cations (Fe3+ or Al3+), resulting in the inhibition of the metal-dependent enzymes.

These enzymes are responsible for the degradation of peroxides within the fungal cell, a process that is important for the growth and reproduction of fungi.

Ciclopirox, therefore, works by inhibiting the growth and reproduction of fungi.

Ciclopirox also has a mild antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect, which helps to reduce the redness, itching, and swelling associated with fungal infections.

These actions work together synergistically to bring about healing when Ciclopirox is used.

How to Use Ciclodan?

Ciclodan is for external use only, so it is to be applied to the affected area only, and not to be  not ingested.

For most of its indications, it is applied two times daily, morning and evening. We will provide a more detailed information on this later.

Before applying the medication, clean and dry the affected area. Apply a thin layer of the solution to the affected area and surrounding skin, using the applicator brush provided with the medication where applicable.

Massage it in gently after application to enhance absorption.

If the dosage form in use is solution, allow it to dry after application before covering with clothing or applying any other topical medications if indicated.

Please complete the full course of treatment using Ciclopirox, as prescribed by your physician even if the infection clears off before the completion of the treatment course.

Failure to complete the full course of treatment may result in the recurrence of the infection as resolution of symptoms may not mean a complete eradication of the fungi.

Clinical improvement upon starting Ciclopirox therapy usually occurs within the first week.

If a patient shows no clinical improvement after four weeks of treatment with Ciclopirox, the diagnosis should be reviewed.
