Why can’t you lay down after taking meloxicam?

An osteoarthritic patient came to my pharmacy to fill his prescription which included Meloxicam. After counseling him about his medications and disease conditions, he wanted to know why he can’t lie down immediately after taking meloxicam.

Meloxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used for the treatment of medical conditions associated with pains and inflammations.

As an NSAID, Meloxicam is used to treat signs and symptoms of arthritis (osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gouty arthritis), spondylitis, etc.

Just like every other NSAID, Meloxicam can irritate gastrointestinal tract.

GI irritation by Meloxicam may cause serious gastrointestinal adverse events, including bleeding, ulceration, and gastric or intestinal perforation.

These gastrointestinal side effects of Meloxicam can get worse when you take it and lie down immediately.

So, to prevent worsening of gastrointestinal side effects associated with Meloxicam use, do not lie down for about 30 minutes after taking it.
