Zymal: Uses, Dosage, Side Effects, and Composition

Description and Composition of Zymal

Zymal is a drug that contains artemether and lumefantrine as its active pharmaceutical ingredient. It is a combination medicine as it contains two drugs to make it more effective in dealing with malaria and less resistance to same. It comes as tablets, softgel capsules, powder for Suspension, and dispersible tablets.

Uses and indications of Zymal

Zymal is used to treat malaria (non severe one).

It is important to note here that it is not used to prevent malaria.

Dosage of Zymal

Zymal comes in strengths of 20/120 mg and 80/480 mg.

Its dose is body weight dependent.

The usual doses are as follow:

For people who weighs 35 kg and above

Take four (4) tablets of 20/120 mg as an initial dose.

Take 4 more tablets 8 hours later.

Then take 4 tablets in the morning and 4 tablets in the evening for the next 2 days.

The patient will take one (1) tablets instead of 4 if the strength is 80/480 mg

For children who weighs 25 kg to 35 kg

Take three (3) tablets as an initial dose.

Take 3 more tablets 8 hours later.

Then take 3 tablets in the morning and 3 tablets in the evening for the next 2 days.

For children who weighs 15 kg to 25 kg

Take two (2) tablets as an initial dose.

Take 2 more tablets 8 hours later.

Then take 2 tablets in the morning and 2 tablets in the evening for the next 2
.

For children who weighs 5 kg to 15 kg

Take one (1) tablets as an initial dose.

Take a second tablets 8 hours later.

Then take 1 tablet in the morning and 1 tablets in the evening for the next 2 days.

Artemether lumefantrine should not be given to a child who weighs less than 5 kg.

Side Effects of Zymal

Common side effects of Zymal may include:

Headache

Fever

Dizziness

Chills

Cough

Feeling weak or tired

pain in your muscle and  joints

Loss of Appetite.

Some people can experience allergic reactions and it could be life threatening. If it occurs, stop your medication immediately and seek emergency medical help.

You may experience other side effects other than those listed above.

Can Zymal  be used in Pregnancy and by Nursing Mothers

The safety of taking Zymal in pregnancy is not yet known. Hence, if you must take it, do that with caution. Meanwhile, no harm has equally been reported.

The same thing is applicable while breastfeeding.

What to do in cases of missed dose

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember.

Skip the missed dose if it is almost the time for your next scheduled dose.

Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
